Stornoway Angling Association - Our Story
The Stornoway Angling Association (SAA) was formed in 1931.
Our waters offer some top-class wild brown trout, sea trout & salmon fishing in the Western Isles.
Membership is open to local & visiting anglers with access to some superb fishing at a very reasonable cost. This includes salmon and sea trout fishing on the River Creed, Loch Langabhat and trout fishing on over a dozen lochs located within 10 miles of Stornoway.
Running our club involved a lot of manual work.
Before we got started with Clubmate, running our club involved a lot of manual work. Membership payments and documents were sent in through the post and there was a lot of back-and-forth file sharing between committee members because we didn’t have one centralised place to store information.
As you can imagine, this made it difficult to get organised and report on club data at committee meetings. It also meant that running the club was taking a lot of our volunteers’ spare time.
At that time, our membership offering was limited to the amount of admin work that we could take on. We wanted to provide a full range of membership services complete with ticket purchasing and boat bookings, so it was crucial to have a system that could support those aspects of our club along with general member management.
Why we chose Clubmate.
Initially, we were unsure that the system could solve all of our problems, but after having a demo we soon saw that Clubmate is the complete package. It provides a solution for each of our needs, from managing memberships and selling them online to selling day tickets and taking boat bookings (for members and non-members).
The main thing that stood out for us was how easy it is to use, both for our committee and our members. Switching to running our club online was going to take some getting used to, but having a simple and intuitive interface made the transition relatively seamless.
Clubmate’s communication feature was also incredibly useful because it allowed us to send emails to our members directly from the database, which saved us hours of time and allowed us to cut back on postage costs too. We can keep in touch far more frequently now.
Life with Clubmate.
Using Clubmate has completely changed the way we operate and has made the lives of our volunteers so much easier. We can finally sell tickets and offer boat bookings without worrying about overbooking or how much extra admin time it’ll cost us. Reporting and sharing club data with other committee members is available 24/7 and we can still print off that information for those of us that prefer physical copies.
Clubmate offers a website service which we took full advantage of, so now our members and those looking to join can get all the information they need in one place. Then, they can purchase a membership, ticket or even purchase some of our branded club clothing – all from the convenience of their home.
Moving to doing more things online has naturally required us to make some changes to the way we work but the Clubmate team has always been available, from providing us with extensive training to providing best practices as queries come up. They have maintained a strong relationship with our club officers from the very beginning and provide a high level of support should we need it.
Would we recommend the system?
We’ve had great feedback from our members as well as committee members, which is fantastic. Our members, in particular, have commented on how angling on our waters is now much more convenient.
Talk to them, tell them what you need and go for it.
